Decision guide
Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal
Both get rid of the stump. The difference is what happens underground — and that decides what you can do with the spot later.
Stump grinding
A grinder wheel chews the stump into chips down to about 6–10 inches below ground. The deeper roots stay and slowly rot. It's faster, cheaper and barely disturbs the yard.
Stump removal
The root ball is dug out with a machine, the hole is cleared, and it's backfilled. It takes longer and costs more than grinding, which is typically $300 per stump — we'll quote removal free so you can compare.
Which one fits your plans
Use what you plan to do with the spot to decide:
- Lawn or mowing path → grinding
- Flower bed or shallow garden → grinding, maybe with root cleanup
- Patio, slab, driveway or shed pad → removal
- New building or foundation → removal
- Replanting a tree in the exact spot → removal, or plant a few feet away
Not sure?
Send a photo and tell us what you want the spot to become. We'll tell you honestly if grinding is enough.
