Finished Lawn Repair
Stump Cleanup, Backfill & Seeding
Go beyond grinding with excess-chip removal, soil backfill, final grading and seed for the disturbed area.
Grinding solves the wood problem, but a lawn still needs the right material at the surface. Fresh grindings are useful as mulch, yet they are not a direct substitute for soil under grass. SS.CO offers a finished option that removes excess woody material, adds soil, grades the area and applies seed.
This service can be included with a new stump job or discussed for a recently ground area that still has a chip mound or settling hole. The condition of the site, amount of remaining wood and season determine the practical next step.
Benefits
Turn the grind area back toward lawn
Remove the material that would otherwise settle and compete with grass at the surface.
Place soil over the cleaned cavity instead of trying to seed directly into wood chips.
Blend the repaired spot with nearby ground while allowing for reasonable settling.
Leave the area seeded and ready for the customer's normal watering and care.
How it works
A four-part lawn finish
Remove or relocate excess coarse grindings from the lawn surface.
Add soil to replace volume and support the future grass.
Shape the repair into the surrounding lawn and account for settling.
Apply seed and leave clear watering expectations for establishment.
The details
Why stump grindings alone do not make a finished lawn
Wood chips decompose, and that process changes the volume and nutrient balance in the repaired spot. A cavity packed only with grindings can settle after the first season and may support uneven grass. Removing the excess and restoring a soil layer gives seed a more suitable surface.
A seeded repair is not an instant lawn and it is not a growth guarantee. Weather, season, watering, shade and foot traffic all affect establishment after we leave. Our part is to prepare, grade and seed the disturbed stump area correctly; ongoing care belongs to the property owner.
Doing some of it yourself? Use our step-by-step aftercare guide. Still deciding? Read grinding vs. removal and what fills the hole.
What happens to the grindings
Useful chips can be placed as mulch or left in a requested pile; excess material can be hauled as agreed. The quote should state the destination so there is no surprise pile after the job.
Accounting for settling
Even with excess wood removed, recently disturbed soil may settle. We grade the repair with that in mind, but larger or deeper stump areas may still need a light soil touch-up after weather and time compact the fill.
Seasonal timing
Seed performance depends on temperature and moisture. The grinding and backfill can be completed when conditions allow, while customers may choose to coordinate the final seeding with a favorable growing window.
When another contractor should finish
If the area will receive sod, irrigation, a patio or engineered fill, tell us before the job. We can stop at the correct stage and leave the footprint ready for the landscaper or builder rather than applying seed that will be removed.
