Land Clearing
Land Clearing & Lot Stump Removal
Shelterbelts, build sites, farm cleanup, orchard pulls — track grinders that eat lots of stumps fast.
When you've got more than a handful of stumps — a shelterbelt being pulled, an old orchard, a new build site, a farm fence-line of cottonwoods — single-stump pricing doesn't make sense. Multi-stump land clearing gets routed differently, priced differently, and machined differently.
We bring the track grinder, batch the cuts, and clear a half-day's worth of stumps in a few hours instead of dragging it out.
Benefits
Why batch a multi-stump job
Per-stump cost drops sharply at 5+, 10+, and 25+ stumps.
More horsepower means bigger stumps go faster — especially old shelterbelt cottonwoods.
One mobilization. We're on-site until the list is done.
Final pass leaves the lot ready for grading, building, or planting.
How it works
Our land-clearing workflow
We walk the lot or shelterbelt and count stumps with you.
Volume price quoted upfront. Schedule around your build or planting window.
Big machine, fast passes, deep grinds. All day if needed.
Chips piled, spread, or hauled. Lot ready for the next phase.
The details
Common land-clearing scenarios in southwest Minnesota
We see the same projects come up year after year out here: aging shelterbelts that finally need to come out, old orchards being converted back to row crop, farmsteads making room for new outbuildings, and developers prepping new build sites where the old farm grove used to stand.
Each one has its own quirks — shelterbelts have giant cottonwood root crowns, orchards have lots of small stumps clustered tight, build sites need deeper grinding for footings. We've done them all.
Shelterbelt removal
Tree service drops them, we grind them. Volume pricing means a 30-stump shelterbelt is way cheaper per stump than three separate residential calls.
Build site prep
Working with a builder or excavator? We coordinate timing so the lot is grind-clear before they bring in the dozer. Deeper grinds on footing locations.
Farm and pasture cleanup
Fence-line stumps, dead trees in pasture, old grove cleanup. We bring the trailer and the track machine and work the property top to bottom.
Machine, pace, and what a clearing day looks like
Multi-stump work runs off the Bobcat with the grinder wheel and, when the ground allows, we stage the trailer once and walk the machine the whole property. A crew day is roughly seven working hours on site. In that window we'll typically clear 20–30 shelterbelt stumps in the 12–24 inch class, or 40+ small orchard and volunteer boxelder stumps, or 8–12 monster cottonwood root crowns over 36 inches. Depth on clearing work is usually 10–14 inches — deeper than a lawn grind, because the ground is going back into crop, pasture, or building.
How volume pricing actually works out
Per-inch pricing collapses fast at scale. Where a one-off residential stump carries the trip charge by itself, a 25-stump shelterbelt spreads mobilization across the whole row and lands closer to $45–$90 per average stump, or a flat day rate when the count is fuzzy. Most farm and build-site jobs out here come in between $1,200 and $3,500 depending on stump count, diameter, and how far the machine has to walk between them. We'll give you a firm number after a site walk, not a moving target.
Where this differs from single-stump grinding and full removal
Land clearing is a routing and throughput problem, not a precision problem. There's no gate to squeeze through, no siding to tarp, no lawn to protect — so we run bigger, faster and deeper than we would in a Marshall backyard. We also don't excavate root balls on clearing jobs unless you're building on the footprint; leaving ground laterals in prairie soil is fine and keeps the cost down. If a single stump on the list sits where a shed or a bin pad is going, we'll flag it and do that one as a full removal.
