Wood Lake sits on a geographic edge that changes what stump grinding looks like from one farm to the next. West of town is classic southwest Minnesota prairie farmland — flat sections, planted windbreaks, straightforward cottonwood-and-boxelder shelterbelt work. East of town the land drops into the Yellow Medicine River bottom, where the trees are actual river-bottom hardwoods (cottonwood, silver maple, elm, and the occasional bur oak) that grew in on their own, not planted by anybody. Those bottomland stumps are different animals: bigger diameters, wetter ground, and roots that spread wide in silty river-deposit soil. A farm whose east property line meets the river bottom might have both kinds of stumps on the same call — three planted-windbreak cottonwoods that grind in a normal day, plus two 30-inch bottomland silver maples that each take an hour on their own. We plan accordingly, quote both categories separately in the estimate, and bring the right machine (tracks for the bottomland side). In-town Wood Lake work is standard residential.
