What to Do After Stump Grinding
The stump's gone. Here's how to turn that pile of chips back into lawn.
1. Deal with the grindings
Grinding leaves a mound of chips and soil. Pull most of it out of the hole. You can use it on paths, around shrubs, or haul it away. Fresh chips pull nitrogen from soil, so avoid leaving a deep layer where grass should grow.
2. Fill with soil
Fill the hole with good soil, a little above grade. Buried wood slowly breaks down, so the spot will settle.
3. Seed or sod
Rake smooth, seed, and keep it damp until the grass takes. Spring and late summer are easiest for seeding in Minnesota.
4. Top off after it settles
After a few rains, the spot may dip. Add a bit more soil and seed to level it.
