Homeowners are usually first-time stump grinding buyers. That means we get a lot of the same questions — and that's good. Asking is how you get the right job done. Below are the things people most want to know before they pull the trigger on a backyard grinding job.
Will you wreck my grass?
Probably not. Walk-behind grinders run on rubber tracks that spread weight, and we keep the path short. Some scuffing is normal — grass fills in within a couple weeks during the growing season.
What about my sprinklers?
Mark your sprinkler heads and lines (or show us where they run) and we'll grind around them. We can't see private buried utilities without you marking them. If you don't know where they run, grind at your own risk — or call your installer for a locate first.
Can I plant grass right away?
Yes. Standard grinding goes 6 inches below grade. Backfill with a couple inches of topsoil over the chip mix, throw down seed, and water. Fall and spring are best.
The gate test, and what fits where
Before anything else, measure your narrowest gate. Anything 36 inches or wider takes the compact tracked grinder, which is what we want in a backyard — it's light on turf, it turns in place, and it doesn't need the fence panel pulled. Between 30 and 36 inches we can sometimes get through by removing the machine's guard. Under 30 inches, the fence panel comes off or the stump gets ground with hand-fed passes, which takes longer and costs more. Tell us the number when you call and the quote stops being a guess.
How long you'll hear the machine
For a typical suburban lot: 10–20 minutes of actual grinding for one 12–18 inch stump, plus setup and rake-out, so call it 45 minutes in the driveway total. Three or four stumps in one yard usually fill a two-hour morning. That's short enough that most homeowners never take time off work — we grind, text photos, and invoice.
What a homeowner actually pays
Single residential stumps in Marshall and the surrounding towns land between $90 and $250 nearly every time, with diameter and gate access doing most of the work in that spread. A row of five to eight old hedge or lilac stumps along a property line is usually $200–$400 as a batch. Chip haul-off is a flat add-on; topsoil and seed over the spot is another small add-on that a lot of people take because it saves them a trip to the garden center.
