How a Garvin job runs

Four steps, start to finish

01
Walk the row (or the yard)

For a shelterbelt we count stumps, measure diameters, and check ground firmness. For a park cabin we look at access, septic locations, and any landscaping in the way.

02
Quote by count + diameter

Row jobs get per-stump volume pricing. Single cabin stumps are quoted flat. Either way you get the number before we book.

03
Grind 6–12 inches below grade

Deep enough to plant grass, run a tiller, or replant nearby. Chips fill the hole; excess gets raked flat or hauled.

04
Clean up + confirm

Rake the site, walk it with you, and we're out. Payment on-site or invoiced for farm accounts.

What we actually do in Garvin

farmstead shelterbelt & grove cleanup, plus cabin lots near Garvin Park

Garvin itself is a blink on US-59 — well under 200 people — but the sections of farmland and park country wrapped around it keep us coming back. Most of our Garvin work isn't in town. It's a mile down a gravel road on a family farm that finally decided the west shelterbelt has to come out, or it's a cabin owner up at Garvin Park who lost two big oaks in a wind event and doesn't want the stumps in the fire-pit sight line anymore. Shelterbelt jobs are our favorite kind of work — a row of ten or fifteen old cottonwood or Chinese elm stumps, all in a straight line, with room for the track grinder to just walk down the row. Per-stump cost drops way down. Cabin work at Garvin Park is different in tempo: usually a single stump or two, sometimes with tight access around a septic line or a deck, and often scheduled on a weekend when the owner is up. We do both, and Garvin is close enough to Marshall (fifteen miles down 59) that we don't need a big minimum to make the trip work.

The details

When to schedule stump grinding in southwest Minnesota

Southwest Minnesota gives us three real working seasons and one hard-stop. Late spring (mid-April through May) is our busiest window — everyone wants stumps gone before the yard greens up. Book two weeks out.

Summer (June through August) is prime time for farm shelterbelt work — ground is dry, we can drive the track grinder anywhere without tearing up turf, and per-stump pricing on a whole belt is as good as it gets. This is also when Garvin Park cabin owners are up and want work done while they're on-site.

Fall (September through mid-November) is our second peak: people want stumps gone before winter, and cool weather means the machine works harder without overheating. Late October frost makes access to soft ground much easier — great for lakeshore and low-lying farm sites.

Winter grinding is possible in shoulder months (December, February, March) when the frost is set but there's no deep snow. We can grind a frozen stump; we can't grind through two feet of drift. When in doubt, call and we'll tell you if it's a go.

FAQ

Working around Garvin — FAQs

Yes — shelterbelt takedowns are one of our best-value jobs. A row of 12 stumps often prices out at less than half the per-stump cost of a single call. Track grinder handles the row without needing to reposition much.
