Slayton is the town on our southern route where the phone rings both for homeowner stumps and for the county-seat work nobody else on the route generates as much of — courthouse grounds, school district punch lists, small commercial lots along US-59, and the occasional city boulevard project. That mix is why Slayton is worth its own trip rather than just a stop on the way to Currie. The older residential blocks north of Main are silver-maple country, planted a century ago and now producing the biggest stumps in town when they finally come out.
